Beautify Malawi Trust

Site Name

Background

The Beautify Malawi Trust (BEAM),is a Not-For-Prot Trust envisioning increased access to participatory and improved sanitation and sustainable community management of waste and sanitation facilities in Malawi. Founded in 2014 by Her Excellency The First Lady Madam Gertrude Hendrina Mutharika, the Trust cherishes the desire for a cleaner and healthier Malawi. The Trust was born out of the following observations on the current environmental situation in Malawi: Why Beautify Malawi? Waste collection levels are low and have triggered widespread illegal open dumping and backyard incineration. This has created negative environmental impacts and increased the health risk of the residents. Open waste dumps are primary breeding sitesfor mosquitoes, houseies, rodents and other vectors of communicable diseases such as fever , diarrhea, cholera, dysentery, and malaria. Fumes from burning waste causes acute respiratory infections and the odours make the environmentuninhabitable. Leachate from dumpsites pollute underground water , thus depriving citizens of an important alternative water source.
